The effect of Apis mellifera ligustica royal jelly on certain biochemical blood parameters in rabbits

Royal jelly is a secretion produced by worker honeybees and contains a wide range of biologically active substances, including proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, polyphenolic compounds, and other components that account for its physiological effects on the body. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of royal jelly obtained from Apis mellifera ligustica (an Italian bee breed) on certain biochemical parameters in rabbit blood. During the experiment, parameters of protein, lipid, and mineral metabolism were determined, as well as the activity of specific blood enzymes. A decrease in the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (P<0.05–0.001) and alanine aminotransferase (P<0.01), as well as in cholesterol levels (P<0.05), was observed on the 14th and 29th days of the study. On the 29th day of the experiment, urea levels decreased (P<0.05). At the final stage of the study, an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity and in the levels of total protein, calcium, and phosphorus was observed (P<0.05). The results obtained indicate a positive effect of royal jelly on certain biochemical parameters of rabbits’ blood and confirm the potential for its use as a biologically valuable supplement.
